Multiple sclerosis (MS) has been described for more than a century, but its
cause remains unknown and no simple diagnostic marker is available. Theref
ore, it is not surprising that numerous articles were written on closely re
lated diseases, borderline forms of multiple sclerosis. Different forms hav
e been distinguished: a clinical form of MS (Devic's neuromyelitis optica),
pathological forms (Balo, Schilder, Maburg), forms associated with MS (per
ipheral neuropathy, autoantibodies) and closely related disorders (acute di
sseminated encephalomyelitis).
