Abstract
The damage mechanisms of thermal barrier coatings are investigated using in -phase (IP) and out-of-phase (OOP) thermomechanical fatigue (TMF) tests. Du ring IP testing, TMF damage is governed by the susceptibility of the coatin g to buckling, In OOP tests, cracking of the substrate controls life. Crack s initiate either at the unprotected surface of the substrate or within the bond coat. nucleated at defects formed during thermal exposure.
