Abstract
A failure model is considered and applied to n-phase brittle materials such as ceramics. Non-elastic behavior of ceramics is considered as a stochasti c process that involves cracking of separate structural elements. Applicati on is made to single-phase ceramic with various statistical distributions o f the grain sizes. Use is made of an effective continuum and a statistical description of the failure process. The theoretical calculations agree with data obtained from acoustic emission. (C) 2001 Published by Elsevier Scien ce Ltd.
