Abstract
Future European emission standards force a dramatic decrease of the emissio ns of heavy duty diesel engines. Current research is focused on technologie s to reduce NOx and particulate matter emissions. This paper presents first results of NOx and PM reduction, using a SINOx SCR system (SINOx is a bran d name derived from Siemens and nitrogen oxide) in combination with differe nt engine technologies. It is shown that even with today's engine technolog y and engine calibration a compact SCR system is able to reduce NOx to meet the emission limits expected for 2008. With a combination of a PM-optimize d engine with an enhanced SINOx system it is demonstrated that both, the PM and NOx limits expected for 2008 can be achieved reliably. The status and the results of long-term experience with SINOx in field tests is also prese nted.
