P. Lynch et al., IMPROVING THE EFFICIENCY OF A DIGITAL FILTERING SCHEME FOR DIABATIC INITIALIZATION, Monthly weather review, 125(8), 1997, pp. 1976-1982
A method of diabatic initialization is described in which a nonrecursi
ve digital filter is applied to both the backward (adiabatic) and forw
ard (diabatic) steps. It has clear advantages over previously proposed
schemes: the initialization requires significantly less computation t
ime and the resulting changes in the analyzed fields are consistently
smaller. Despite these smaller increments, the suppression of spurious
high-frequency noise is at least as effective as for the earlier sche
mes.
