Systemic inflammatory response syndrome is a common clinical entity often p
resenting as a complication of neurological disease or trauma. Clear diagno
stic criteria exist. Induced pathological mechanisms include both immunolog
ical and endothelial dysfunction, and coagulopathy, which may lead to multi
ple organ failure and significant morbidity. Possible therapeutic mechanism
s are discussed, but this complex syndrome is poorly understood and success
ful treatment may depend on further research into control mechanisms.
