Coordination of power flow control in large power systems

Implementation of a New Electricity Trading Arrangement is imminent in the UK. It aims to improve power industry efficiency and economy, but its dynam ic nature is also associated with more uncertainties. Flexible AC Transmiss ion Systems (FACTS) concept is particularly applicable to a dynamically cha nging transmission system. However, advantages of FACTS could be compromise d by interactions in a transmission system, in particular where multiple po wer flow control devices are used. This paper addresses the coordination of power flow control in a large power system, managing transmission constrai nts to meet the security standards against the background of this open mark et structure.
