Abstract
This paper, on the basis of the Vedas and other writings, refutes the view that the four Varnas are hierarchical and that the institution is divine an d that the Varna-Vyavastha still functions. The study tries to explain how the Varna-Vyavastha died gradually and was replaced by Jati-Vyavastha.
