It has been found that the central ring of 5-dicyanomethylene-10,11-dihydro
-5H-dibenzo[a,d]cycloheptene,1, undergoes bond inversion which is slow on t
he NMR time scale at ambient temperature. The character of this conformatio
nal process has been established and its activation energy estimated.
