Intercalation of platinum-metal fluorides into graphite has been carried ou
t using either the gas-solid reaction with gaseous RuF5 or OsF5, or the liq
uid-solid reaction in anhydrous HF at room temperature, with RhF5, IrF5 or
AuF3. The obtained graphite intercalation compounds crystallize in stages 1
-3, depending mostly on the nature of host graphite. The oxidation state an
d the structural environment of the intercalated transition element have be
en deduced from X-ray diffraction (XRD), magnetism, X-ray absorption spectr
a (EXAFS), XANES and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) studies. (C) 20
