With a high-current wall-stabilized are, operated in helium with small admi
xtures of CO2, relative line strengths for some prominent infrared multiple
ts of neutral carbon have been measured. The results are analyzed in conjun
ction with previously obtained experimental data in the visible and near in
frared region of the spectrum. Our experimental results are compared with t
hose resulting from the Russell-Saunders coupling scheme and with recent so
phisticated intermediate coupling calculations. The results of this paper m
ay be helpful for the improvement of atomic structure codes used for line s
trength calculations. The determined relative line strengths may also be us
eful in astrophysical applications.
