We have developed a formulation of resonant x-ray Raman scattering of molec
ules and solids based on the Mahan-Nozieres-De Dominicis model. A key step
in the formulation is given by a reduction of the Keldysh-Dyson equations f
or the Green's function to a set of linear algebraic equations. This gave w
ay for a tractable scheme that can be used to analyze the resonant x-ray sc
attering in the whole time domain. The formalism is used to investigate the
role of core-hole relaxation, interference, band filling, detuning, and si
ze of the scattering target. Numerical applications are per-formed with a o
ne-dimensional tight-binding model.
