The hydration and selectivity characteristics of MA-40 anion-exchange membr
anes saturated with lauric acid and coated with polystyrenesulfonate were e
xamined. The intermolecular interaction and the state of water in the membr
anes were studied by IR spectroscopy. Measurements of the limiting wetting
angle show that the surface layer of the membranes is hydrophobized. In the
separation of two-component mixtures of electrolytes by electrodialysis, t
he membranes exhibited a higher selectivity with respect to less hydrated i
ons.
