Forestry practices intended to ensure ecological sustainability have been d
eveloped rapidly during the past decade and now are widely deployed and pro
moted. In a recent special issue of the Scandinavian Journal of Forest Rese
arch, forest ecologists and biodiversity experts consider how this new mana
gement responds to Fennoscandian concerns about biodiversity. The authors c
onclude that the new forestry practices are largely untested scientific hyp
otheses, and explore a sound research framework aimed at improving manageme
nt of boreal forests.
