Abstract
Documented cases of phenotypic change consistent with heritability estimate s and the strength and direction of selection are relatively rare. There ar e several possible reasons for this paucity, including environmental maskin g of genetic change. A new paper by Merila and colleagues documents 'crypti c evolution' in a longterm study of collared flycatchers in Sweden, and mak es the case for hidden evolutionary change in general.
