We investigated the association of Parkinson's disease with tau gene haplot
ypes. In a sample of 319 unrelated Parkinson's disease patients and 196 con
trol subjects, we observed an increased risk of Parkinson's disease for per
sons with the H1/H1 genotype (odds ratio = 1.5; 95% confidence interval: 0.
98-2.23); however, the finding was not statistically significant. The resul
ts remained similar after adjusting for the possible misclassification of p
rogressive supranuclear palsy patients as Parkinson's disease, but became s
tatistically significant after restricting the analysis to nondemented subj
ects.
