Abstract
Phospholipase A(2) (PLA(2)) is proposed to play a role in the repair of the ruptured membrane after axotomy. In neonatal rats, we examined the effect of Group IIA secretory PLA(2) (sPLA(2)-IIA) on axotomy-induced cell death o f motoneurons. sPLA(2)-IIA significantly induced death of axotomized motone urons. Indoxam, a specific inhibitor for sPLA(2)-IIA, protected motoneurons from the sPLA(2)-IIA-induced deterioration. The present study indicated th at sPLA(2)-IIA possessed neurotoxic effect rather than neuroprotective effe ct against facial nerve. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved .
