A case of Tsukamurella peritonitis associated with peritoneal dialysis in a
23-year-old woman is described. The organism was difficult to identify and
was mistaken for Corynebacterium and atypical mycobacteria. Despite prolon
ged, multidrug, antimicrobial therapy with conventional antibiotics includi
ng vancomycin, ciprofloxacin, rifampin, gentamicin and ceftazidime, cathete
r removal was required to successfully treat peritonitis. Human infection d
ue to this organism is rare and has been previously reported in only 13 cas
es, 1 of which was peritonitis. We describe here the second case of Tsukamu
rella peritonitis associated with peritoneal dialysis.
