Abstract
Founded in Trieste, Italy, in 1983, by a distinguished group of scientists from the South under the leadership of the late Nobel Laureate Abdus Salam, the Third World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) is an autonomous international organization that is dedicated to promoting scientific excellence in the de veloping world. Today TWAS is considered a leading voice in discussions on the advancement of science in the South and a major player in efforts to pr omote South-South and South-North cooperation on issues related to science- based sustainable development.
