A new fixed target experiment to study hadron structure and hadron spectros
copy has been approved at CERN as the CERN experiment NA58 - COMPASS. An ap
propriate two-stage large acceptance spectrometer, with particle identifica
tion and calorimetry in both stages, using either polarized muon (100-200 G
eV) or hadron (up to 300 GeV) beams and polarized as well as unpolarized ta
rgets is being constructed at CERN. The beams for the COMPASS were provided
in the years 1999-2000 and physics measurements will start in the year 200
