The application of an adaptive-network-based fuzzy logic power system stabi
lizer (ANF PSS) to a five-machine power system environment is described in
this paper. A multi-layer adaptive network is employed to design a fuzzy lo
gic PSS with self-learning capability; the fuzzy inference rules and member
ship functions are tuned automatically, without resorting to another existi
ng controller. Details of the design process are given and the effectivenes
s of the proposed stabilizer to damp multi-mode oscillations is investigate
d. Studies also show that there is no conflict between the proposed ANF PSS
and other types of power system stabilizers on the system.
