Abstract
We review the status of the hypothesis that interventions that increase the resistance to stress offer the potential for effective life prolongation a nd increased health. The work focuses on research in the nematode worm Caen orhabditis elegans and describes both published and unpublished results con sistent with this hypothesis. Correlations between stress resistance and lo ngevity among many gerontogene mutants is provided. (C) 2001 Elsevier Scien ce Inc. All rights reserved.
