A classical field system is considered that consists of two interacting sca
lar fields, the Higgs real field and a complex scalar field. It is demonstr
ated that there exists a nontrivial topological solution in this system-a k
ink carrying a U(1) charge. Certain questions are discussed related to the
stability of the solution obtained. An improved variational procedure is pr
oposed for determining topological U(1)-charged configurations. (C) 2001 MA
