Aim. To study effect of enalapril on 24-hour blood pressure profile, charac
teristics of plasma lipid peroxidation, some parameters of metabolism of ca
rbohydrates and lipids in patients with non-insulin-dependent diabetes mell
itus (NIDDM) with hypertension. Material and methods. Enalapril (5-15 mg/da
y) was given to 30 patients with NIDDM and mild and moderate hypertension.
Twenty four hour blood pressure recordings were obtained before and after 6
weeks of treatment. Blood samples for determination of parameters of lipid
peroxidation, lipid and carbohydrate (plasma insulin, glycosylated hemoglo
bin and average 24-hour glycemia) metabolism were taken at the same time po
ints. Results and conclusion. Treatment with enalapril was associated with
pronounced antihypertensive effect, reduced pressure load, and favorable ch
anges of 24-hour blood pressure profile and peripheral sensitivity to insul
in. Evidence for direct antioxidant action of enalapril was also detected.
Enalapril did not cause worsening of lipid or carbohydrate metabolism and w
as well tolerated.
