L. Tan et W. Johnson, Removing organic color and by-products from groundwater with ozone and pressurized biologically-active filtration, OZONE-SCI E, 23(5), 2001, pp. 393-400
Ozone oxidation and pressurized biologically active filtration treatments w
ere tested for the removal of organic color and by-products from a highly c
olored groundwater. Ozone oxidation greatly reduced the color level of untr
eated groundwater. Following ozone oxidation, pressurized biologically acti
ve filtration provided good removal of assimilable organic carbon. Both chl
orine and chloramine disinfectants were equally effective in reducing the h
eterotrophic plate counts. Chloramines were found to be much more effective
than chlorine in controlling the formation of by-products.
