G. Garces et al., Mechanical properties of the Mg-14Ti-1Al-0.9Mn (%Wt) synthesized by physical vapour deposition (PVD), REV METAL M, 37(2), 2001, pp. 264-268
The mechanical properties of the alloy Mg-14 %Ti-1 % Al-0.9 % Mn obtained b
y PVD techniques have been evaluated up to 300 degreesC. The alloy presents
a columnar grain microstructure, typical of the zone 2 of the structure zo
ne model of MD, where surface diffusion takes place. The alloy tested in co
mpression at room temperature presented a high yield stress, 360 MPa. This
resistance to the plastic deformation is principally due to a solid solutio
n hardening and small grain size. The yield stress decrease with the compre
ssion temperature. However, the alloy showed low fracture resistance, espec
ially at room temperature. The presence of pores at the grain boundaries, r
esults in the crack formation, running fast along the grain boundary.
