Em. Dianov et al., ORIGIN OF EXCESS LOSS IN SINGLE-MODE OPTICAL FIBERS WITH HIGH GEO2-DOPED SILICA CORE, Optical fiber technology, 3(1), 1997, pp. 77-86
The problem of excess loss in single-mode germanosilicate optical fibe
rs with GeO2 content 20 to 35 mol% is experimentally studied. Excess l
oss in such fibers is due to the drawing-induced defects, UV absorptio
n tail and scattering. It is sensitive to drawing conditions and to co
doping with F and P. Codoping with P results in additional loss presum
ably caused by P-related drawing-induced defects. Codoping with F dimi
nishes the excess loss presumably by smoothing the inhomogeneous distr
ibution of GeO2 in SiO2-GeO2 glass. (C) 1997 Academic Press.
