Patients on hemodialysis are at increased risk for developing infectio
ns from various microorganisms. Vascular access sites ave potential so
urces of infections in these patients. Although vascular access graft
infection from Listeria monocytogenes is uncommon, it is potentially l
ife threatening. Herein we describe a case of vascular access graft in
fection from Listeria monocytogenes which required graft removal in ad
dition to intensive antibiotic therapy. Cephalosporins, which are comm
only used for surgical prophylaxis, are ineffective against listeriosi
s. Hence, they should not be used in renal failure patients undergoing
major surgical procedures.
