Abstract
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the antioxidant effects of acetaminophen in atherosc lerosis. DATA SOURCES: Experimental literature and abstracts accessed through MEDLIN E (1966-February 2001). DATA SYNTHESIS: Atherosclerosis is an inflammatory disorder associated with coronary events. The oxidative stress burden resulting from excess pro-oxi dant free radical formation contributes to oxidative modification of low-de nsity lipoprotein (lipid peroxidation) and is associated with atheroscleros is. Acetaminophen (phenol-like compound) may limit these key processes that are involved. The findings of earlier experimental laboratory tests and ab stracts are evaluated. CONCLUSIONS: In vitro data suggest that acetaminophen may reduce lipid pero xidation, whereas animal data showed decreased progression of atheroscleros is. Further animal model and human studies are required to confirm these ea rlier findings.
