This essay describes an approach facing some of the challenges of glycoscie
nce, concentrating on the relation between structure and reactivity. This h
as resulted in new methods, precursors of carbohydrate-derived reactive int
ermediates, analysis of their reactivity, and application mostly in synthes
is. It has also led to the design, synthesis, and use of enzyme inhibitors,
and to novel carbohydrate mimics and nucleotide analogues.
