Lanthanum(III) chlorophyll-a [La(III)-chl-a] was synthesized from pheo
phytin-a (pheo-a) and lanthanum(III) chloride-sevenhydrate (LaCl3.7H(2
)O) in the present wort. Its characteristics have been investigated by
ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis), magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) and F
T-IR spectre. The spectra of Cu(II), Zn (II), Mg(II), and free metal c
hlorophylls were presented for purpose of comparison. These results de
monstrate that porphyrin ring of pheo-a is coordinated to La(III) ion
successfully. The composition of La(III)-chl-a, which is formulated as
[La(III) (chlorophyll) (CH3COO)(-1)(H2O)], has been confirmed by elem
ental analysis, UV-Vis, MCD and FT-IR spectre. In addition, La(III)-ch
l-a may have the structure similar to that of monoporphyrin chi-a and
Zn( II)chi-a, which was shown from their similar MCD spectra.
