In this work, the so-called excess surface tension model proposed by the pr
esent authors for metallic systems has been extended and applied to molten
ionic systems, stags or salts. The surface tension, sigma, in a molten bina
ry slag or salt is regarded as the summation of sigma (1) and sigma (E) to
represent respectively the contributions of the linear and non-linear behav
iour of the solution. The excess surface tension is correlated with mole fr
action and temperature as
sigma (E) = A(0) + A(1)(x(1) - x(2)) + A(2)(x(1) - x(2))(2)
where A(j)=A(j),0+A(j), (1), j=0, 1, 2
The model's predicted results for some binaries of molten slags and salts,
as well as for a ternary slag at a fixed mass percent ratio of two componen
ts, are provided to show the model's validity and applicability. The predic
ted surface tension values have been found to be in reasonable agreement wi
th the corresponding experimental data.
