The unimolecular dissociation of HCO in its ground electronic state is cons
idered. By performing calculations (filter diagonalization, absorbing poten
tial) for nonzero angular momentum quantum numbers, it is demonstrated how
mixings with near-by "background" states affect the linewidths of the narro
wer resonance states. This explains qualitatively the theoretically as well
as experimentally observed behavior of the linewidth as a function of the
vibrational quantum numbers. (C) 2001 American Institute of Physics.
