Abstract
The kinematic theory of electron scattering is used to estimate the da rk-field, weak-beam image contrast of a stacking fault with an associa ted fault vector which has a component in the direction perpendicular to the plane of the fault. II is shown, using the rigid ion model of t he crystal potential, that the average contrast of the image depends o n the sign of the diffraction vector. The difference in contrast depen ds oil the angle of inclination of the fault with respect to the incid ent electron beam and may be large enough to be observed experimentall y.
