This paper is concerned with the stress state induced by a radial force app
lied to a circular shaft, shrink fitted into a plate. Conditions for the av
oidance of separation and slip are considered, together with the overall st
rength of the contact. The problem is considered as a complete or receding
contact, and solutions are developed by two independent routes, which brack
et the perfectly lubricated and adhesive bounds to the problem, and which p
rovide a versatile design route.
