The first optically active polydendrimers have been synthesized by polymeri
zation of binaphthyl-based dendrimers. Study of the chiral optical properti
es of the polydendrimers and their model compounds has revealed that the in
teraction of the dendritic side chains along the polybinaphyhyl backbone ca
nnot induce a secondary helical conformation. Energy migration from the den
dritic side chains to the more conjugated bolybinaphthyl main chain is obse
rved through absorption and fluorescence spectroscopic studies. As the dend
ritic generation increases, the glass transition temperature of the polyden
drimers decreases significantly, The dendritic substituents have made consi
derable influence on the thermal transition of the polybinaphthyls.
