The 1998 hurricane season in the Atlantic basin is summarized, and the indi
vidual tropical storms and hurricanes are described. It was an active seaso
n with a large number of landfalls. There was a near-record number of tropi
cal cyclone-related deaths, due almost entirely to Hurricane Mitch in Centr
al America. Brief summaries of forecast verification and tropical wave acti
vity during 1998 are also presented.
