Abstract
The reactions of the OH adducts of cytosine and its derivatives with nitrox ides namely TEMPO and TEMPOL have been followed by steady state gamma -radi olysis and pulse radiolysis. Pulse radiolysis studies show that the transie nt OH adducts of cytosine and its derivatives react with TEMPO and TEMPOL b y electron transfer reaction and not by adduct formation as was observed in the case of thymine. The second order rate constants for these electron tr ansfer reactions are of the order of 10(7) - 10(8) dm(3) mol(-1) s(-1).
