Checklist of Sphagnum in New Hampshire

Forty-three species and two subspecies of Sphagnum are reported for New Ham pshire, including fifteen species and one subspecies documented from herbar ium records and recent collections. Diversity at county and biophysical sub section (ecoregion) levels is presented and areas that remain undercollecte d in the state are highlighted. New Hampshire has a great diversity of Spha gnum species, reflecting the diversity of climatic, geologic, and environme ntal characteristics of the state. Several species with restricted distribu tions are discussed, and habitats critical to these species are described f or future conservation efforts.
