Optimal control for the flight trajectories of flying vehicles in the
Earth's atmosphere in a vertical plane is studied, using angle of atta
ck and engine thrust as controls. Exact solutions are determined far d
egenerate problems with these controls and constant and variable mass
of the vehicle. An approximate solution of the general problem, its op
timality estimate, and numerical algorithm are derived. This paper is
a continuation of [V. F. Krotov, Avtomat. Telemekh., No. 3, 47-57 (199
5)], in which the problem is formulated and preliminary results are re
ported.
