Abstract
Considering the ratio of the mean flow Reynolds number to the wave Reynolds number, it is shown that for the low frequency instability the mean flow i nertia is small in comparison to that of the disturbance. The mean flow gra dient thus being small is neglected to obtain a truncated Orr-Sommerfeld eq uation. The numerical solutions of this equation show instability at lower Reynolds numbers.
