Synthesis of some new fused heterocycles related to pyrrolopyrazoloquinazolines

The reaction of 3-amino-2-methylquinazoline-4-ones (4a,b) with succinic anh ydride (8) gave 2-methyl-3-(N-succinimido)quinazolin-4-ones (9a,b). Cycliza tion of compounds (9a,b) yielded pyrrolo[1",5":2',3']pyrazolo[5',1'-b]quina zolin-1,4-diones (10a,b) which reacted with aromatic aldehydes afforded 2-a rylidenopyrrolo[1",5":2',3']pyrazolo[5',1'-b]quinazolin-3,6-diones (I laf). The latter derivatives are used in the synthesis of the polyheterocyclic q uinazolines (12a-f), (13a-f) and (14a-I).
