Abstract
Powerful strategies for screening protein libraries further strengthen the arguments far applying 'irrational' approaches to understanding a nd designing new proteins. Developments during the past year include t he application of functional complementation and automation to reduce screening loads, as well as the use of computerized data acquisition t o characterize whole protein libraries rather than just selected indiv iduals.
