Abstract
During the pad two years, ?he crystal structures of beef hear? cytochr
ome c oxidase with 13 subunits and the bacterial enzyme with four subu
nits have been reported at atomic resolution, ushering in a new era fo
r cytochrome c oxidase research. Different proton pumping mechanisms h
ave been proposed for the two organisms.
