Reported partition coefficients and solubility data at 25 degreesC were use
d to determine the salting coefficients of acetic, benzoic, o-chlorobenzoic
, m-chlorobenzoic, p-chlorobenzoic, o-hydroxybenzoic, m-hydroxybenzoic and
p-hydroxybenzoic acids in various saline media. Coefficients were calculate
d on the molarity and molality scales. Except for acetic acid, which exhibi
ted a negative coefficient in two of the 29 electrolytes used, all the acid
s were found to have positive values in the studied media. Consequently, th
e presence of a salt decreases the solubility of these acids.
