Abstract
When the coupled Earth-Moon system is considered rather than a closed terre strial system (the Earth's atmosphere, ocean, inner and outer cores, and ma ntle), an eigenfrequency of free oscillations of the Earth is transformed i nto an eigenfrequency of the Earth-Moon system, making it possible to under stand the increase in the Chandler period in a natural way. The eigenmodes of the coupled Earth-Moon system are determined by solving a linear, homoge neous set of equations with two degrees of freedom. (C) 2001 MAIK "Nauka/ln terperiodica".
