Chlorpromazine (CPZ) is known to induce hyperglycaemia and can inhibit insu
lin secretion in both normal subjects and patients with latent diabetes mel
litus. In this study, we have tried to determine a probable mechanism by wh
ich CPZ causes hyperglycaemia. It is possible that CPZ causes insulin aggre
gation by the reduction of disulphide bonds, thereby inactivating insulin a
nd hence causing hyperglycaemia. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science Inc. All rights
