S. Singhal et al., Right-sided non-bacterial thrombotic endocarditis in a chronic hemodialysis patient with Muir-Torre syndrome, CLIN NEPHR, 55(4), 2001, pp. 331-334
Endocarditis is a recognised complication of hemodialysis. This is generall
y only thought of in terms of infective vegetations. We present a case of r
ight-sided NBTE in a patient with an indwelling venous catheter who also ha
d advanced pelvic malignancy. The unusual side of this patient's endocardit
ic lesions implicates a role for the venous catheter in determining the sit
e of non-bacterial thrombus formation. It is also a reminder that endocardi
tis is always a risk when using central venous catheters, even after approp
riate sterile precautions have been taken.
