Kh. Mcinnis et al., CARDIOVASCULAR SCREENING AND EMERGENCY PROCEDURES AT HEALTH CLUBS ANDFITNESS CENTERS, The American journal of cardiology, 80(3), 1997, pp. 380
A survey of 110 fitness centers in Massachusetts reveals that many do
not follow generally accepted guidelines for administering preparticip
ation cardiovascular screening, obtain physician consent for individua
ls with known cardiovascular disease, and prepare for emergency situat
ions should they occur. Thus, the promotion of physical activity to th
e general public now underway in the United States must also coincide
with better screening at all fitness centers to maximize the potential
for safe exercise participation at fitness centers.
