Dowry-related violence: An overview

Problems related to dowry have come to the attention of Indian social worke rs from the 1960s onwards. Dowry-induced violence may be physical or mental , overt or covert. The article describes the involvement of different syste ms and individuals and provides case illustrations. It highlights the effor ts of some women's organisations and the problems faced by them in handling such cases. Recommendations, both preventive and remedial, are also offere d for the eradication of the menace.
